CHINESE actress Vicki Zhao has been accused by a man in a legal complaint of causing him mental anguish with her "constant stare" at him with her "big eyes" through the television screen, the Chinese media reported.

Zhao, 39, who shot to fame with roles in a number of television drama series in the late 1990s, has often stood out among Chinese actresses because of her huge eyes.

She once told the media that her big peepers were what helped her land solid roles in the early years of her acting career and gain many fans.

However, the man in Shanghai is claiming that Zhao's gazing at him through the television screen with her big eyes has caused him discomfort and mental suffering, reported the China Daily.

The man took the complaint to a court in Pudong district, and the court president last week disclosed it to the Legal Daily.

Judge Tong Ling cited the case as one of the many absurd ones he has received, as he updated the newspaper on the implementation of a system in Shanghai whereby anyone can file complaints freely and easily with the local court.

The judge did not say whether the complaint against Zhao would be heard, reported the Legal Daily.

But he said that "if a plaintiff follows up with evidence and all the required actions, including hiring a lawyer, a registered case could proceed to become a legal suit", said the newspaper.

It is not known what legal recourse the man who claims to be disturbed by Zhao's eyes is seeking.

When the news was picked up by China's biggest micro-blogging platform, Sina Weibo, netizens responded with jeers and amazement at the case, the China Daily reported.

"Is the guy insane? What's wrong if an actress has big eyes?" one Weibo user asked.

Another commented: "This kind of ridiculous lawsuit should be condemned; it is a waste of the court's time."

Meanwhile, Zhao has been seen to be in high spirits lately, as her investment in the Alibaba Pictures Group has taken her personal fortune past the billion-dollar mark.

After her marriage to wealthy businessman Huang Youlong, she has made new breakthroughs in her career, including trying her hand at film directing.
