Woman stuck under bench at Jurong CC
AN ELDERLY woman was trapped under a bench at a community club (CC) after she fell through the gap between the bench and a wall on Tuesday evening.
The woman, who is in her 60s and believed to weigh 120kg, was understood to have been sleeping on the bench beside a flight of stairs at Jurong Spring CC, evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday.
She was trapped for about 20 minutes and later rescued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). She was conscious when taken to the National University Hospital.
The gap between the bench and the wall flanking the stairs was estimated to be about 30cm wide, Wanbao reported.
A 34-year-old cleaner by the name of Azhar said the woman's face was turned to one side and she was unable to get herself out.
Some members of the public tried to rescue her but to no avail, and they called SCDF for help.
SCDF said that it received a call at 6.11pm and sent a fire engine and an ambulance to the scene. SCDF personnel used a grinder to cut the bench near its base, so that the bench's seat could be removed to free the woman.
While the rescue was under way, a crowd of almost 50 people gathered around the bench.
Mr Azhar said that the woman looked very pale and seemed to be in pain after she was rescued.
A resident, who lived nearby and gave his name only as Mr Chen, said he had seen the woman frequently.
Mr Chen said she would visit the CC almost every day, arriving between 10am and 11am, and leaving at about 7pm.
He did not know where the woman lived, but said she would sit on the bench almost daily to take naps.
A Jurong Spring CC spokesman said it had tried to reach the woman's family, and added that the bench would be removed to prevent similar incidents from happening.
