Woman in fatal truck accident still unidentified

A WOMAN, believed to have been cycling home after grocery shopping, was run over by a trailer truck on Saturday and died on the spot.

The accident occurred at about 1pm along Whampoa East Road, towards Serangoon Road.

An eyewitness, Alan Mu, 45, told Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News in a report yesterday that the woman had been cycling on the edge of the road when she fell suddenly.

Shin Min understands that the woman had lost her balance and the truck could not stop in time to avert the accident.

The truck was carrying wooden racks and other construction materials.

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Demu, 32, told Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao in a report yesterday that he saw someone lying on the floor with "the top half of the body gone".

He added that the victim's bicycle had been wrecked and that the 65-year-old driver of the trailer truck was shocked and at his wits' end.

As of yesterday, the woman, believed to be in her 50s, had not been identified, as her head was mangled beyond recognition.

She did not have any identification on her.

Wanbao understands that her body was sent to a mortuary, where tests are being done to determine her identity. Police told My Paper yesterday that a 65-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case and that investigations are ongoing.
