Teary Modi appointed India's PM
INDIAN President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Narendra Modi as the country's prime minister, and invited him to take the oath of office on Monday.
Earlier yesterday, Mr Modi pledged to work for India's poor in an emotional speech after his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) picked him to lead its elected lawmakers and form the government.
"The government should think of the poor, hear them and live for them," Mr Modi told BJP lawmakers, pausing to wipe away tears at one point.
He said "the common man has got renewed (confidence) and faith in democracy" after the win on Friday by the BJP, which won the first majority by a single party since 1984.
The BJP-led bloc won 336 of the 543 seats up for grabs, with the party alone winning 282.
