'Spider-Man' to turn off Marina Bay lights

SPIDER-MAN star Andrew Garfield, along with his co-stars, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, will be swinging into Singapore on March 29.

The cast of upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be kicking off the annual Earth Hour on that night, helping to switch off lights across the iconic Marina Bay skyline from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

Garfield's character, Spider-Man, was recently announced as the first superhero ambassador for Earth Hour, organised by non-profit group World Wide Fund for Nature.

Earth Hour is the world's largest environmental campaign, having grown to over 150 countries and 7,000 cities and towns worldwide since its first event in Sydney seven years ago.

The campaign encourages individuals and organisations to shut off all of their non-essential lights for one hour to raise climate-change awareness.

Singapore first took part in 2009. Over 400 organisations pledged their support for the cause last year, with more than 5,000 participants gathered at The Float @ Marina Bay for the official lights-out ceremony.

This year's ceremony is being held in conjunction with the culmination of the Urban Redevelopment Authority's i Light Marina Bay festival.

CapitaLand, one of the largest developers in South-east Asia, said more than 200 of its properties across Asia and Europe will be participating in Earth Hour this year by turning off their facade lights and non-essential lighting for extended hours throughout the night.
