SG50 baby gifts for UK princess

PRINCE William and his wife Catherine yesterday spent their first day back at home with their baby daughter, as Britain eagerly awaited a name for the new royal princess.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, their first-born Prince George and the new arrival were expected to spend the next few days relaxing together at their Kensington Palace apartment, a day after the Duchess gave birth to the baby girl, who is fourth in line to the throne.

The beaming couple left St Mary's Hospital on Saturday carrying their newborn, who weighed in at 3.7kg. They were cheered by hundreds of well-wishers who had gathered outside the hospital in central London, along with the massed ranks of photographers from the world's media.

The sleeping baby was wrapped in a woollen shawl as the relaxed-looking Duchess, 33, cradled her in her arms in front of the hospital's private Lindo Wing.

Prince William, 32, then drove his wife and daughter to Kensington Palace.

The first visitors included the grandparents, Michael and Carole Middleton, Kate's sister Pippa, and Prince Charles and his wife Camilla. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip were also expected to drop in for a first glimpse of their fifth great-grandchild.

At press time, Britain was eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new princess' Christian name. Charlotte became the new favourite with the bookmakers yesterday, overtaking long-time favourite Alice.

The newborn is the first princess born into the British royal family since Princess Eugenie, daughter of the queen's second son Prince Andrew, 25 years ago.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a Facebook post yesterday that the princess, born on the 50th anniversary of Singapore's independence, will receive a special birthday surprise from President Tony Tan Keng Yam - an SG50 Baby Jubilee Gift.

"Remember warmly their visit to us in 2012. Happy that they have an SG50 baby!" Mr Lee said in his post.

The Baby Jubilee Gift includes a special medallion, a multi-functional shawl, a baby sling, a set of baby clothes, a diaper bag, a scrapbook, a family photo frame and a set of baby books.
