A SEAFRONT promenade in Penang will be named Karpal Singh Drive in memory of the former Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he would propose the naming of the promenade, which is located next to Penang Bridge, at the next state Exco meeting.

He said the 800m-long promenade was popularly known as IJM Promenade but had no official name.

The body of Mr Singh was cremated yesterday after a final farewell by thousands of mourners chanting his name.

Family members spent some 30 minutes performing the last rites for him, while making repeated pleas to the public to move away from the casket.

The casket, bearing the body of the "Tiger of Jelutong", was draped with a carpet bearing the image of a tiger.

The opposition leader was given a funeral with state honours.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Penang to send him off on his last journey.

The procession made stops at several places dear to Mr Singh - the Penang High Court, his office in Green Hall, the Penang state assembly building, his alma mater St Xavier's Institution and the DAP's state headquarters.

Mr Singh, 73, was killed in an accident while travelling with four others in his multi-purpose vehicle from Kuala Lumpur to Penang in an overnight journey on the North-South Expressway. His driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a slow-moving lorry in the left lane.
