NUS modifies naming of degrees
THE National University of Singapore (NUS) will use a new naming system for its degree classification, following some major universities in the United States, such as Stanford University.
A First Class Honours will be renamed Honours (Highest Distinction), Second Class (Upper) Honours as Honours (Distinction), Second Class (Lower) Honours as Honours (Merit) and Third Class Honours as Honours.
"The current terms, especially for the Second Class (Lower) and Third Class are a bit demeaning for our students, and not giving due recognition to the students," said NUS provost Tan Eng Chye. "By and large, the honours students are our best students, and therefore, we have to recognise them as such."
