Najib sues former minister for defamation
MALAYSIAN Prime Minister Najib Razak has launched a defamation suit against former transport minister Ling Liong Sik for remarks made about him and the debt-ridden state investment arm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Mr Najib, who filed the suit on Tuesday, is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages from Dr Ling, The Star daily reported yesterday, quoting sources.
Earlier this month, Dr Ling said at a press conference that he agreed with former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad that Mr Najib had "taken the people's money and put it in his own personal accounts".
The former president of the Malaysian Chinese Association was referring to the RM2.6 billion (S$845.2 million) found in Mr Najib's personal account in July, which some foreign media alleged to have been channelled through 1MDB-linked companies.
Following his remarks, Dr Ling was notified by Mr Najib's lawyers to retract them and make an apology, failing which he would be sued.
But Dr Ling said he was ready to defend himself in court.
