Myanmar maid on murder rap
A 24-YEAR-OLD maid from Myanmar, Than Than Win, was yesterday charged with the murder of an elderly woman she was helping to look after.
Madam Yong Wan Lan was found on Tuesday afternoon lying motionless on the floor of her eighth-floor Springdale Condominium unit in Bukit Timah, according to The Straits Times.
The 85-year-old woman had stab wounds on her upper body and was pronounced dead at 6.27pm. The incident happened an hour before - at about 5.30pm.
Neighbours interviewed by Lianhe Wanbao said that they heard Than sobbing loudly at the balcony for two hours on the night before the incident. The victim, one said, was chatty and lived in the apartment with the maid, as well as her son, daughter-in-law and grandchild.
Another neighbour told the Chinese evening tabloid that a security guard had alerted police after spotting the maid covered in blood and wielding a knife. The neighbours also said that the family has had five to six different maids in the past decade.
A maid who works in the same condominium told Shin Min Daily News that Than had worked with the family for about a year and had complained that she was scolded frequently by the victim.
Than will be remanded at Changi Women's Prison for a psychiatric evaluation. She is expected to appear in court again on March 26 and faces the death penalty, if found guilty.
