Martial law? Coup? Half-coup? Thailand tries to work it all out
At 3am yesterday, while Thailand slept, its military chief appeared on television to declare martial law. He stressed it was not a coup, though the caretaker prime minister was not consulted. But some now call it "half-a-coup", while others say it is a "phantom coup". More pertinently, while some feel the move could break the impasse between the rival camps, others say that the military would have to tread carefully from this point on.
