Jobs Bank gets filled up with local 'assets'
A MONTH after it was launched, the Jobs Bank is proving to be a game changer for the recruitment industry.
Already, there are more than 54,000 jobs being advertised on the online portal. Also, employers and recruitment firms looking to employ Singaporeans and permanent residents (PRs) find that they can do so without having to sieve through scores of applications from foreigners.
More than 60 per cent of the "live" job vacancies advertised on the website are relevant to local professionals, managers and executives.
The active industries range from information and communications to manufacturing, administrative support and trade.
What's more, the jobs are attractive.
Last month, 88 per cent of the advertised jobs offered a monthly salary of more than $3,000, while 44 per cent offered more than $4,500. Some 13 per cent of job vacancies offered a monthly salary of more than $8,000.
As of the end of last month, more than 62,800 job applications were made by more than 11,700 registered individuals.
Employers and recruitment agencies told My Paper yesterday that with only Singaporeans and PRs able to apply for jobs, the portal has made the processing of applications much easier.
IT company IMG Logics now receives between five and eight applications within two days of posting vacancies on the Jobs Bank. Its earlier ads would attract between 50 and 80 applications in two days - mostly from foreigners.
"The best thing about the site is that you get only Singaporeans and PRs applying," said Ong Thiam Chye, the company's managing director. "Before this, you could receive 50 to 100 applications, and over 90 per cent of them would be foreigners'."
This convenience has helped Adrian Tan, managing director of recruitment agency RecruitPlus Consulting, spend 30 per cent less time weeding out those who are unsuitable.
Like many employers, Mr Tan still faces the problem of receiving applications mostly from foreigners through other avenues. "Just (the other day), we came across a foreigner who (mis)stated his name as James Lee so as to encourage us to look at his CV," said Mr Tan.
But if a position needs to be filled in a hurry or involves skills that are scarce, employers said they would still need to look beyond the Jobs Bank. The same applies to jobs that locals are not keen to take up.
"If we want locals, we can just go to this portal and we'll definitely get locals," said Ong Siew Kim, senior general manager of DP Information Network.
"But we would still want to cast the net wide...it is harder to get locals for some positions that require manual effort."
