In Japan, robot dogs are for life - and death
A man places "dead" Aibos - pet robot dogs from Sony - at an altar prior to holding a funeral service for them at the Kofuku-ji temple in Isumi, Japan. Sony rolled out the first generation of Aibos in June 1999. The robots are equipped with artificial intelligence and can develop their own personalities. Some owners have grown attached to their Aibos and believe they have "souls".
