It was a 'light smack', not 'heavy beating'

A SOURCE close to a Malaysian couple, who were arrested by the Swedish authorities for allegedly hitting their 12-year-old child, said the case has been blown out of proportion.

According to the couple's eldest daughter, Aisyah, her brother was given a light smack near the forearm and not a heavy beating.

"If anything, the scolding he got upset him more than the smack," the source told The Star.

In Stockholm on Dec 18 last year, Tourism Malaysia director Azizul Raheem Awalludin and his wife, Ms Shalwati Nurshal, a teacher, were arrested for disciplining their son.

Their four children - aged 14, 12, 11 and seven - have since been placed with a foster family appointed by the Swedish authorities.

The source described Mr Azizul and Ms Shalwati as "very loving people".

"I find it strange that Mr Azizul was detained even though he was absent when the smacking took place. He was in the office, why was he incarcerated?"
