Fewer public carparks with free parking on Sundays

THERE are now fewer public carparks which have free parking on Sundays, compared with six years ago.

Currently, just over half - or 55 per cent - of the government and statutory board carparks offer free parking on Sundays, Senior Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee told Parliament yesterday.

In 2005 and 2010, the proportion was higher at around 70 per cent, Mr Lee said, in response to a question filed by Non-Constituency MP Leon Perera.

Mr Lee said that in assessing whether to provide free parking on Sundays, agencies have to balance the specific needs and parking demands of the area.

"For example, it may not be feasible to have free parking on Sundays in HDB carparks where there is high demand for parking from the local residents," he added.

Government and statutory board carparks are run by agencies such as the Housing Board, the National Parks Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
