Bus goes off course, causes hour long jam
A BUS that veered off course, after its driver took a wrong turn, caused a massive hour-long jam along Upper Bukit Timah Road yesterday morning.
Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that SBS Transit's Service 157 deviated from its usual route between Toa Payoh and Boon Lay at about 9.40am and ended up stuck in a narrow road in front of shopping centre Beauty World Centre.
One passenger told Wanbao that the driver was supposed to have made a right turn into Dunearn Road. Instead, he drove straight into a one-way lane in Upper Bukit Timah Road.
Passengers on board the bus reportedly alerted the driver that he was heading in the wrong direction.
Several attempts to reverse out of the narrow road failed and the driver called SBS Transit for help. The bus operator sent staff down to help divert traffic and direct the driver out of the tight spot.
When approached by reporters, the bus driver declined to comment. But he was overhead telling the staff that he thought he was on the correct route.
The last reported case of a driver losing his way was in January last year, when an SMRT bus plying between Shenton Way and Bukit Batok Interchange went off course.
