Anwar's wife to run for Kajang seat

DATUK Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will replace her husband, Anwar Ibrahim, as the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate in the Kajang by-election on March 23.

Anwar was disqualified from contesting the seat after the Court of Appeal overturned his High Court acquittal on Friday and sentenced him to five years' jail for sodomising former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008.

The Kajang seat was vacated by PKR's Lee Chin Cheh on Jan 27, paving the way for the by-election - allegedly an attempt to install Anwar as the next Selangor chief minister.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is PKR president, said she accepted the nomination. "I would like to invite all Malaysians to give a clear message to the government that we cannot be oppressed by injustice, no matter what," she added.

She was unfazed when it was suggested that her candidacy was an attempt to warm the seat for her husband.
