Anwar's daughter to withdraw divorce suit

MALAYSIAN opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's daughter and Lembeh Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar filed a divorce petition against her husband, Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim, but is likely to withdraw it.

A check of the court records by The Star Online yesterday showed that a divorce case exists between the Parti Keadilan Rakyat vice-president and her husband, who is a member of the Johor royal family.

But they are believed to have been persuaded to reconcile.

Ms Nurul is expected to file her withdrawal petition at the lower Syariah Court in Jalan Duta, according to sources.

It is understood that family members persuaded the couple to work things out after news broke online that Ms Nurul, 33, had filed for divorce late last month.

Raja Ahmad Shahrir, 35, is believed to have received the petition last Thursday.

Court officials confirmed that their divorce case was in the system and Ms Nurul and her husband were both parties in the suit.

She refused to talk about reports that she had filed a divorce petition.

When asked, she told reporters: "Thank you for respecting my privacy."

The couple were married in 2003, and have a daughter, seven, and a son, four.
