2 killed, over 12 injured in Florida shooting

AT LEAST two people were killed and more than a dozen were shot yesterday at a nightclub thronged by teenagers in the Florida city of Fort Myers.

The incident came just weeks after an attack at a gay bar in the state left 49 dead.

As many as 17 people were shot in the early-hour shooting at Club Blu, Miami Herald quoted police captain Jim Mulligan as saying.

Three people had been detained and there were two crime scenes, he added.

The venue was holding a party for teens at the time, according to the Central Broadcasting System.

On its Facebook page, the club had advertised a "Swimsuit Glow Party" on Sunday night that was open to people of all ages.

Gunfire erupted outside the club at about 12.30am and police later found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot.

Victims, aged 12 to 27, began arriving at Lee Memorial Hospital around 1.30am, according to the hospital's spokesman.

"One victim expired at the hospital," the New York Times quoted her as saying.

In a statement, authorities said police were "actively canvassing the area looking for other persons who may be involved in this incident".

"The Police Department is attempting to determine a motive," said Capt Mulligan.

Omar Mateen, the gunman who attacked the gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, was a United States citizen of Afghan origin.

He had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria militant group.

That rampage and other recent shootings have renewed debate about gun laws in the US.

Fort Myers, about 193km north-west of Miami, has about 65,000 residents.
