My three Malaysia havens
In his first television foray, Kuala Lumpur- born, Petaling Jaya-raised Ezra Said gets to discover things he never knew about his place of birth.
10 Things You Don't Know About Malaysia sees the 30-year-old publisher and radio DJ - who hosts a popular satirical YouTube series, That Effing Show - traversing the country unearthing little-known facts.
My Paper caught up with Ezra to discuss the show and find out what he loves about Malaysia.
What appealed to you about hosting this particular show?
It was a bit of a no-brainer (decision to host the show) in the sense that I've never done anything like this before.
I've done a few things online and lots on radio. But, in terms of the subject matter, I was very excited to discover a lot more about the country.
Were you aware of these 10 things before you got involved with the production?
I wasn't familiar with about 80 per cent of the things on the list.
You think you know a lot about your country, but there're so many little bits of history that you just aren't familiar with.
We (Malaysians) are very singular about how we tell the Malaysian story, so I think what this programme tries to do is extrapolate a little bit further from what we're familiar with.
You visited the site of the highest density of cockroaches in the world. What was that like?
As you enter the cave, there's a very weird sensation that you're entering their "home" and, as a result, you become less paranoid (about being surrounded by cockroaches).
They're flying everywhere and it's pretty full-on, but they're quite calm. So you just try to appreciate the ecosystem there.
What would you say are the three most underrated places in Malaysia?
I'm very partial to Kota Baru in Kelantan. There are misconceptions about the backwardness of some of the states in the east.
But, when you go there, you'll be struck by the good-heartedness, generosity and friendliness of the people.
I'm also a newly converted fan of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. There's a very nice vibe about it.
Ipoh is underrated. There's so much happening there right now - a lot of great things coming out of Ipoh and a lot of people from there doing great things in many different industries.
10 Things You Don't Know About Malaysia airs on Monday at 9pm on the History Channel (StarHub Ch 401).
