LIVERPOOL GET MATIP ON A FREE TRANSFER
ENGLISH football club Liverpool have won their struggle to sign giant Cameroon central defender Joel Matip from Schalke 04 on a free transfer at the end of the season, the Bundesliga outfit confirmed on Monday.
The 24-year-old, who stands at 1.95m tall, has been capped 27 times by Cameroon and played at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
The German-born star, who can operate as a midfielder and as centre-back, is thought to have signed a four-year deal.
NADAL NOT FAZED BY ZIKA VIRUS AHEAD OF RIO OPEN
SPANISH tennis player Rafael Nadal, who will play this week in the Rio Open, downplayed public concerns over risks linked to the Zika virus in the Brazilian city that will host the Olympics in August, saying "people are living completely normal lives".
Nadal is one of the first major sports figures to compete in the city since Brazil became the focal point for the virus that has spread rapidly across the Americas.

GOLFER Rory McIlroy has set his sights on regaining the world No. 1 ranking from Jordan Spieth in time for the Masters, as he prepares to make his debut at the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles this week.
The Northern Irishman, who has slipped to third in the latest world rankings behind Spieth and Australia's Jason Day, hopes his appearance in California can kick-start his season.
