PALACE HOWLER ENDS VILLA'S LOSING RUN
ASTON Villa beat Crystal Palace 1-0 to end a nightmare 19-game winless streak in the English Premier League on Tuesday, with Joleon Lescott the hero of the hour. The defender's goal came from a 58th-minute corner, when Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey dropped his routine header and watched in horror as it first hit his leg before bobbling between his legs and across the goal line.
It was also French coach Remi Garde's first win in 11 games in the Villa hot seat since replacing the sacked Tim Sherwood.
PORZINGIS DRIVES KNICKS TO GRITTY WIN OVER CELTICS
ROOKIE forward Kristaps Porzingis poured in 26 points to lead the New York Knicks to a gritty 120-114 triumph over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks (20-20) won for the fifth time in their last seven games despite the loss of Carmelo Anthony, their leading scorer, who left the game with a sprained right ankle after a collision with a referee late in the first half.
OPEN INJURY SCARE FOR KYRGIOS AT KOOYONG
NICK Kyrgios suffered an Australian Open scare on Wednesday, when he pulled out of his opening match at the Kooyong Classic with a right-foot injury.
The 20-year-old Australian handed David Goffin victory as he retired with the score at 6-7 (5-7), 3-2 to the Belgian.
The colourful contender finished with 15 aces, including four in his final service game of the second set. The year's first Grand Slam starts on Monday in Melbourne.
