Man U turn attention to Hummels
AFTER missing out on Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, who moved to Barcelona, Manchester United have stepped up their case for Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels, according to the Daily Star.
The 25-year-old German international is widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world at the moment, after his superb recent displays in the Bundesliga, as well as at this summer's World Cup with Joachim Low's victorious side.
United are hoping that a bid of £20 million (S$42 million) may be enough to bring him to Old Trafford, though Dortmund will be keen not to see another of their big-name players leave.
Jurgen Klopp's side have had to cope with the departures of the likes of Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski to rivals Bayern Munich in recent years, while Shinji Kagawa was poached by United.
If United's efforts to land Hummels fail, they will make a £17 million move for Ajax's Daley Blind, the Daily Star reported.
Blind was part of United boss Louis van Gaal's Dutch team, which finished third at the World Cup. He is 24 and can operate as a left-sided centre-back or at left-back, either in an orthodox role or as a wing-back.
Another possibility for United in their centre-back search is Roma's Mehdi Benatia.
United, meanwhile, are still being linked with an ambitious attempt to sign Real Madrid's Argentina winger, Angel Di Maria.
But that is being touted as a £50 million deal and mega-wealthy French club Paris Saint-Germain have dropped out of the running, saying the whole package is too expensive.
