Gu Juan bows out of national team

SINGAPORE'S top women's singles player Gu Juan has quit the national badminton team and will play no part in the upcoming Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi.

Gu, 23, tendered her resignation to the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) last week, citing a "desire to look after her ageing parents and nagging injuries" as reasons for her departure.

The world's No. 22 also expressed a reluctance to train under a new coaching set-up at the SBA as she feels "they are unable to take her to the next level".

The SBA had at the beginning of this year appointed Liu Qingdong as its new head coach, replacing former chief singles coach Luan Ching.

The Straits Times reported soon after Liu's appointment that Gu had written to the SBA, expressing a desire to leave.

Singapore will be playing in the Finals of the prestigious world team championships for women for just the second time.
