Feng and Yu advance to quarter-finals

BOTH Singapore's paddlers in the women's singles have made the quarter-finals, after Feng Tianwei swept past Austria's Liu Jia on Monday night.

The second seed in this event beat her world No. 25 opponent 11-6, 11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4.

Feng was largely untroubled in the match against Liu, an opponent she had never lost to in five previous encounters on the professional circuit.

Still, with a raucous crowd in the stands rooting for the underdog, errors leaked from the Singaporean.

"I got into the rhythm of the match pretty quickly but my opponent changed tack in the fourth game and I could not adapt quickly enough," Feng said.

She was playing her second match of the day, having survived a scare from Luxembourg's Ni Xialian earlier in the third round.

The 2012 singles bronze medallist will face Japan's Ai Fukuhara next, joining teammate Yu Mengyu in the last eight.

She said: "I may have a superior head-to-head record against Ai but, at this stage, it does not really matter what happened in the past."

Earlier in the day, Yu also earned a place in the quarter-finals after beating South Korean Jeon Ji Hee 12-10, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-2.

Yu will play North Korean Kim Song I on Tuesday morning (9pm, Singapore time).
