Ban on trading players for Barca
BARCELONA were banned from trading footballers for a year, after bringing foreign athletes aged under 18 to the famed academy that trained four-time player of the year Lionel Messi.
They also received a fine of 450,000 Swiss francs (S$642,000) for the offences between 2009 and last year.
If upheld, the ban would have serious consequences for Barca, especially with veterans Carles Puyol and injured goalkeeper Victor Valdes set to leave in June. The Catalans were expected to complete the signing of German international goalkeeper Andre Ter-Stegen to replace Valdes.
Under Fifa rules, football clubs can field minors from another continent only if their parents are living in the same country for reasons not linked to football.
