Athletic turn down Man U's bid for Herrera

ATHLETIC Bilbao have rejected a £29-million (S$62-million) offer for Ander Herrera from Manchester United, the Basque club have confirmed on their website.

However, reports from England suggested that Manchester United were still confident of getting their man - and this could be a bargaining ploy on the part of the Spanish club.

The Red Devils were reported to be on the brink of signing the former Spain Under-21 international after the midfielder flew to Manchester to complete a medical at the club's Carrington training ground.

However, it appears the 20-time English champions are still some way from completing a move for the highly rated 24-year-old, who was also a target for axed Red Devils manager David Moyes last summer.

Herrera was Athletic's standout performer last season, as the playmaker scored five goals and made five assists in 33 La Liga appearances.
