Short getaways for a haze-free weekend
THE haze situation isn't as bad as it was last week. But with the Government cautioning that the problem may persist for weeks or months, it may be best to give your lungs a break by scooting out of town for a short break.
Why not head to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam? This Asian jewel is a beautiful city where one can catch a show at a puppet theatre, learn about history at wartime sites such as an old French prison, or laze by the peaceful Hoan Kiem Lake.
Consider spending a day or two at Ha Long Bay, which is accessible by bus from Hanoi (the journey takes four to six hours). Made up of 1,900 islets, this Unesco World Heritage Site is magical with its limestone karsts and turquoise waters.
Explore caves and take photos with spectacular stalactites on the island of Bo Hon, or go diving at the Dau Be, which boasts rich coral life and deep grottoes in its inland lakes.
If you have the time, make a trip to Siem Reap in Cambodia. It is just 1 hour and 40 minutes away from Hanoi by plane. Everyone should visit the Angkor Archaeological Park - another Unesco World Heritage Site - at least once.
Flight Centre Singapore is offering packages to Hanoi, comprising return flights and two nights' accommodation with breakfast at the Mercure Hanoi La Gare, from $311 (not including taxes).
Siem Reap packages, which comprise return flights, airport transfers and two nights' accommodation with breakfast at the Sokha Angkor Resort, start from $337 (not including taxes).
If all you want to do is lounge around and get a tan, Koh Samui in Thailand would be your pick. The island boasts several beautiful beaches, including Chaweng, the most developed one there.
Koh Samui packages, which comprise return flights, private airport transfers and two nights' accommodation with breakfast at the Nora Beach Resort, start from $460 (not including taxes).
Mr Gary Yen, product and marketing leader at Flight Centre Singapore, said these destinations are feasible for impromptu travel. "They are affordable, with decent accommodation provided, and are easy to fly to. Koh Samui is also ideal for those who are stressed."
