MALACCA, a tourism haven that was named a Unesco World Heritage site in 2008, is a city on the move.
Tourism arrivals spiked by nearly 36 per cent from 2009 to 2012, and retail shop prices have gone up from RM800 (S$309) per sq ft six years ago to RM3,200 per sq ft last year.
Amid this backdrop of growth, a new development is coming up that will offer just about everything under one roof.
Imperio@Hatten City, an ambitious 33-storey mixed development, will include seven shopping levels catering to local and international fashion brands and 20 levels of residential apartments.
It also has a hypermarket as an anchor tenant, offering convenience to residents living at Imperio Residences.
The development strives to be different in other ways.
With its modern 45-degree retail layout and double-helix spiral escalators that connect the ground level to each retail floor, the mall is set to be a visual stunner.
The residential blocks are U-shaped, a sharp departure from the usual square-block design.
Facilities for residents are plentiful. There is a private athletic club and spa on the 13th floor, and other facilities such as hydro massage tubs, barbecue decks and a reading area on the top-floor viewing deck.
With a high-speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Singapore set to be completed in 2020, Malacca will be just an hour away from Singapore.
The Imperio is accessible by car via a network of major highways, reachable within 21/2 hours from Singapore and 11/2 hours from KL.
Its arrival brings the overall size of Hatten City to a whopping 10.1ha - with a net development area of 6.5 million sq ft.
