    The power of placenta

IN A 1995 episode of popular television show Friends, the character of Phoebe, while poring over a book on pregnancy, declares: "Ooh, this is cool...it says that in some parts of the world, people actually eat the placenta."

Today, that revelation would not be as surprising.

It seems times have changed, as more women are consuming their placenta after giving birth. The organ is where oxygen and nutrients are transferred from the mother to the foetus during pregnancy.

Celebrities like Mad Men's January Jones and Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik have had their placentas made into capsules for ingestion.

Closer to home, a Sunday Times report in August found that Singaporean women have been doing so as well.

And America's Next Top Model winner Lisa D'Amato recently made headlines for posting a photo of two smoothies online just weeks after giving birth to her son, Daxel.

The caption read: "Prepped my 1st placenta 'hers and his' smoothies for my hub and me".

Rich in iron and proteins, and with high levels of vitamins like B6, placenta is now seen as a "superfood" in some circles.

Women who haven't given birth can also benefit from consuming placenta.

Said to possess rejuvenating qualities to treat age-related skin problems, placenta can be found in a range of skincare products, such as those from Dr Ci:Labo.

Available in tablet, drink or even jelly form, the products - which are made using placenta from Specific Pathogen Free pigs - are recommended to fight against sagging skin, wrinkles, menopause and fatigue.

Try Placenta Gold, which contains 2,500mg of placenta extract and is said to boost immunity.

If you're concerned about taste, the Placenta Jelly is the way to go.

Besides being low in calories and fat-free, the beauty supplement has flavours like sweet rose and peach. It contains ingredients like collagen and hyaluronic acid, which firm and moisturise the skin.

Dr Ci:Labo's range of products also include the popular Aqua-Collagen-Gel and the firming Lift Keep Cream.
