Get to know The Dental Studio's stars

YOUNG and smart, they are in the business of making over your smile.

These are the stars at The Dental Studio (TDS), a subsidiary of The Singapore Medical Group.

    Get to know the doctors.

    What she does:

Everyone notices teeth, Dr Ng, who is the founder and director of TDS, said. She is most passionate about helping someone reconstruct their smile as this gives her the opportunity to help someone transform their life.

"There's a sense of aesthetics involved," she said. Perhaps this came from her childhood, when she used to help her brother build model aircraft, she said.

"Prosthodontics is a combination of art and science," she added.

Dr Ng obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1998.

She went on to obtain specialist training in prosthodontics in the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programme with the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

After spending almost 10 years in public service, she set up The Dental Studio. Her goal? To provide personalised services to her patients.

In fact, if you call asking for an appointment, you might just find yourself speaking to Dr Ng as she mans the phone lines from time to time.

    Extra-curricular activities:

Dr Ng loves travel, especially to Unesco World Heritage sites.

This is because they are "steeped in history", and she is fascinated by world civilisations. She lists Barcelona, Iceland and Greece as three of her favourite destinations.

    DR WOO MEI YEE, 36

    What she does:

Dr Woo finds orthodontics challenging, and particularly loves treating kids and young adults.

"I love interacting with them," Dr Woo, who has a five-year-old son, said.

Orthodontists treat irregularities in alignment and occlusion of the teeth and jaws. This can include the use of braces.

Like Dr Ng, Dr Woo also obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from NUS.

She obtained specialist training in orthodontics through an MDS programme with the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

    Extra-curricular activities:

Dr Woo cooks and bakes in her free time.

"I love making soups for my family because of my Cantonese heritage," she revealed. She also loves making brownies, pandan cakes and banana cakes.

    DR TAN SU WEE, 26

    Dental Surgeon

    What she does:

Dr Tan's job scope is extremely wide. She does everything from scaling teeth to extracting wisdom teeth.

She feels compassion for special-needs patients in particular, and has a keen interest in treating them.

"Some of the special-needs patients are unable to verbalise (the pain they are experiencing), so they suffer in silence. There are few dentists involved in this area," she said.

Dr Tan obtained her Bachelor of Dental Science degree from the University of Melbourne.

She was awarded a prize for being the top student in Paediatric and Special Needs Dentistry upon graduation.

    Extra-curricular activities

: Dr Tan enjoys fine dining, especially Italian food. Her go-to restaurant is Osteria Mozza at Marina Bay Sands.

She attributes her love for Italian food to the time that she spent living in Lygon Street - also known as "Little Italy" in Melbourne.

She also loves doing yoga, and practises with Dr Ng, who she looks up to as a role model.

The Dental Studio is located at 290 Orchard Road #13-01/06 Paragon.
