THE offerings of Hong Kong's TVB station have been plagued by far-fetched and overly convoluted plots.

Thankfully, the romantic drama Slow Boat Home, which follows the love lives of young people on rustic Cheung Chau island, doesn't have bizarre plot twists like those seen in detective drama Bullet Brain.

Neither does it have a mind-boggling storyline, as is the case for period drama Beauty At War.

In Slow Boat Home, the viewer gets a refreshingly simple story in which actor Ruco Chan takes on the role of Dr Ching Lai Wing, who finds himself falling back in love with former childhood sweetheart Kwok Hei Man (Selena Li).

Watch for the chemistry between actress Aimee Chan and actor Raymond Wong, who starred as a bickering duo in historical drama The Confidant.

Here, Wong is Cheung Po Sang, the island's resident bum, while Chan plays feisty documentary director Kate Cheng. Po Sang acts as a guide to Kate and her crew, showing them around Cheung Chau.

Watch out, though, as the cheery tone changes in the wake of a boating accident and a vacation-home acquisition project.

The Cheung Chau setting is rife with sandy beaches and azure skies. If one sometimes feels that it's too close to a tourism ad, then look at it as a vacation from real life - not to mention from the imposing skyscrapers, sprawling palaces and dour courtrooms of the usual TVB offerings.
