Jolie's birthday gift to Pitt: A $25m island
NORMAL folks buy heart-shaped pendants for their lovers.
But A-lister Angelina Jolie is splashing out £12.2 million (S$24.8 million) on a heart-shaped island for Brad Pitt, according to The Mirror.
The 38-year-old Hollywood actress was reported to have visited Petra Island - which is located just 80km north of New York City - last week and thought that it would make the perfect gift for her partner, who celebrates his 50th birthday on Dec 18.
Jolie was reportedly excited after finding out that the island's two homes were designed by Pitt's favourite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.
A source revealed to The Mirror: "As soon as Angelina heard the island was on the market, she arranged a viewing. She was really impressed.
"The house is perfect for romantic getaways or as a family retreat. It's very private. And Angelina knows the fact that the island is in the shape of a heart will mean so much to him."
The exclusive 4.5ha island has a helicopter pad and is situated on New York's private Lake Mahopac.
The island's two homes are a cottage that was put up in 1950 - nine years before Wright's death - and a main house that was built in 2008 from a Wright plan and is one of his most spectacular designs.
The house - which boasts vast expanses of stone, cement, mahogany and skylights - is said to be the perfect getaway for Pitt and Jolie, as well as their six children: Maddox, 12; Pax, nine; Zahara, eight; Shiloh, seven; Vivienne and Knox, both five.
In 2011, Jolie bought a waterfall in California for Pitt's 48th birthday so that he could build a house over it.
Pitt, who is known to be a fan of architecture, was inspired by Wright's Fallingwater, a house built over a waterfall.
The source told The Mirror: "The fact he could now live in a house designed by one of his idols will make this his best birthday present."
