I would love to explore the Arctic
Besides doing comedy projects, TV shows and movies, award-winning actor Alec Baldwin has taken on the job of hosting National Geographic's Explorer 125 series, a weekly Night of Exploration block that "celebrates the spirit of exploration".
The 55-year-old actor from 30 Rock revealed that he is a bit of an explorer himself and hopes to go on Arctic expeditions.
Baldwin shares his concerns about the environment in interviews with overseas media.
Why did you take up the National Geographic project?
The documentary, Seduced And Abandoned, that we did about the Cannes Film Festival - which was also screened in Cannes - was really our homage to Cannes and to film-making.
I really had a wonderful time making the film and I would love to make another documentary as soon as I can.
It's a form of film-making that I'm very fond of.
Did you research a little about the content you would be presenting?
National Geographic is a group that presents the world in which education is the goal, and you see, for example, there was a complaint about the hunting of a bear in this one episode, but that episode by no means glorifies the hunting of the bear.
It treats it in a documentary style. And I always believe that showing these things on television creates awareness. I'm...opposed to hunting, but I know that you cannot outlaw hunting.
Do you think that governments are taking measures to do something about environmental issues?
Obviously, the answer is no, they have not taken actions as effectively as they should, and we are going to do what human beings normally do, and that is we'll do everything at the last possible minute.
You've done so much lately on Broadway, TV and movies. Do you think of yourself as an actor who is capable of doing anything?
I think of myself as someone who gets bored very easily, so I do a little of this thing and then I change.
I try to do as many different things as I can because I want to make sure I keep changing so I don't get too bored.
Are you personally interested in exploring in any way?
Well, I would love to. I have friends who do that and I'd love to join them on occasion.
But it is time consuming. My wife and I just got married and she's having a baby, so I think my hardcore exploring passion will have to be postponed once again.
The little exploring I do, we would go away and I would make films and we would travel to different parts of the country, or even the world.
I've been in every corner of the United States, from the Pacific Northwest to the Bayous of Louisiana, and to the Canadian Rockies.
Everywhere I go, I make it a point to see as much of the terrain as I can. But I do have some places I do want to go.
I would love to go on one of these Arctic expeditions, but, again, I think I have to postpone that.
Alec Baldwin hosts Touching The Dragon, which airs on Saturday at 10pm on National Geographic (StarHub Ch 411/SingTel mio TV Ch 201).
