His career milestones
1983 - Joined the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation after completing the fifth artist drama-training class. 1984 - Debuted in drama series Youth, in which he starred as the lead, a quarrelsome fishmonger. Also starred in The Awakening.
1985 to 1988 - Was the lead character or co-lead in nine out of 11 drama serials, including Man Of Valour (1986) and Airforce (1987). 1988 - Made it to the Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artiste list in the Star Awards Show, thanks to his hit role as a pilot in Airforce.
1989 to 1997 - Went on to star in 27 dramas. He was lead or co-lead in 16 of them, such as the popular Navy (1990). He was also a big name in gongfu serial The Legend Of The Beauty (1991), with Hong Kong TV actress Michelle Yim.
1997 - Made it to the Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artiste list in the Star Awards Show, thanks to his role in The Royal Monk. The series - which spawned The Return Of The Royal Monk (1998) - also garnered him international popularity. It won the Most Popular Overseas Production award in China's Golden Chicken Award (1998).
From 2001 - Gradually took on more supporting or patriarchal roles, but was still participating in many dramas.2010 - Set up his own production company, Emperor Entertainment Productions, in May with four partners.
2012 - Took on the role of a father in local film-maker Anthony Chen's movie, Ilo Ilo.
Filming took place over 27 days from May to June. It went on to snag the Camera d'Or for best debut feature in the Cannes Film Festival a year later.
