THAI FARMERS TO CLOSE AIRPORT IN PROTEST
TENS of thousands of Thai rubber farmers protesting against a sharp drop in prices escalated protests across southern Thailand yesterday, cutting off access to large swathes of the region by blocking roads leading to tourist and commercial hubs.
Around 20,000 protesters are gathered at three main rally sites in the south, watched over by a heavy police presence. Protest leaders yesterday threatened to shut down Surat Thani airport, a transit point for tourists travelling to Ko Samui, if their demands are not met.
POLICE SUSPECT AUNT OF GOUGING OUT BOY'S EYES CHINESE police suspect a six-year-old boy's aunt of gouging out his eyes, Xinhua news agency said yesterday, adding a surprising twist to a gruesome case with conflicting details.
DNA tests found the boy's blood on the aunt's clothes, Xinhua reported, citing a statement from the police. The aunt, Zhang Huiying, killed herself six days after the attack by jumping into a well, the agency said. The aunt was an early suspect, but the boy's family maintained that their relationship with Zhang was positive.
CLEVELAND RAPIST FOUND DEAD IN CELL
THE former US bus driver jailed for life for kidnapping and raping three young women he held as sex slaves for a decade hanged himself late on Tuesday, the authorities said.
Ariel Castro, who had been in solitary confinement, was found hanging in his cell, the Ohio Department of Corrections said in a statement. Officials tried in vain to resuscitate the 53-year-old, according to the statement.
Castro had been sentenced on Aug 1 to life plus 1,000 years in prison after pleading guilty to 937 offences.
