From under the sea, into the New Downtown
The Marina Coastal Expressway, which opens to traffic on Dec 29, is unlike any that Singapore has seen so far. For one thing, it boasts a 420m stretch where a motorist finds himself driving under the seabed (and he can still retain his phone-network connection, even though he's not supposed to call and drive at the same time). The 5km-long architectural marvel was built at an average price of $860 million a kilometre. But, experts say, this price tag could well be justified. Not only does MCE make for a smoother drive between the east and the west, while taking in the new downtown, but it also frees up a prime parcel of land that can be developed to add to the buzz around the Marina South area.
