Truck driver in hit-and-run of 81-year-old arrested
POLICE have arrested a tipper-truck driver who fled after knocking down an 81-year-old retired nurse on Saturday afternoon.
Madam Chin Siat Keow, who was hit near the junction of Henderson Road and Jalan Bukit Merah at around 12.40pm, died from multiple injuries at 9.25pm.
Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that doctors at Singapore General Hospital, where she was taken to unconscious, used nine bags of blood but it was not enough to save her.
It also reported yesterday that the driver is a 49-year-old Chinese man. Investigations are ongoing. The woman's younger sister, Ms Shirley Chin, , whom she lived with near Farrer Park, called it a "very tragic accident".
"She was a very kind-hearted woman, someone who was passionate about helping people," she told The Straits Times.
Madam Chin had been in the medical industry for over 40 years, working full-time as a nurse in various hospitals, and volunteering at the Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution in Toa Payoh.
Despite having retired for over 10 years, she would still attend talks on traditional Chinese medicine, said her sister.
"Her death is very unexpected because my sister did not have major health problems," said Ms Chin, who did not know why her sister was at Henderson.
Statistics from the Traffic Police show that heavy vehicles were involved in about 20 per cent of fatal accidents last year.
