Stuff of legends
The oarfish is the stuff of fantasy novels. So when marine-science instructor Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute spotted this 5m-long carcass while snorkelling off the Southern California coast on Sunday, it made her day. More than 15 helpers were needed to drag the fish ashore. As oarfish dive more than 900m deep, sightings are rare. They can grow to more than 15m and are likely responsible for sea-serpent legends throughout history.
