Share-A-Gift brings early Christmas cheer
ONE of Mr See Say Beng's favourite pastimes is to collect magazine pages in his sling bag. But the 25-year-old, who has a mild intellectual disability, has been using the same worn-out bag for years.
Christmas came early for him when he received a new black sling bag yesterday, sponsored by Prudential Singapore under this year's Boys' Brigade Share-A-Gift project.
Mr See was among 30-odd beneficiaries who had their wishes fulfilled in advance at an event held at Bishan Community Centre.
The beneficiaries were from Reach Family Service Centre and the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled.
Now in its 26th year, the Share-A-Gift project aims to bring cheer to the less fortunate by distributing food items. It also seeks to fulfil specific Christmas wishes of beneficiaries.
This year, the project is targeting to reach out to 40,691 beneficiaries, a 34 per cent increase from 30,285 last year.
The beneficiaries are identified by the National Council of Social Services and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
Mr Lui Chong Chee, chairman of the project's organising committee this year, said Share-A-Gift's scale this time is the largest to date.
To meet its "ambitious target", Mr Lui plans to reach out to more schools and grassroots organisations to spread the word about the project.
He also appealed to the public to "join in the effort...to give someone the gift of happiness and hope".
Share-A-Gift will take place between Nov 20 and Dec 18.
The public can help by fulfilling specific wishes, as well as donating food items during these dates.
They can also deliver the gifts to the beneficiaries on Dec 7 and Dec 14.
The main collection point for general wishes is at Bishan Community Centre.
Other collection points are at NTUC FairPrice outlets across the island.
Specific wishes that the public can help to fulfil can be found on Christmas trees at FairPrice Xtra outlets at AMK Hub, Jurong Point and nex shopping mall.
