School terms and holidays for next year

THE Ministry of Education (MOE) yesterday gave the dates for next year's school terms and holidays.

The school year for all MOE primary and secondary schools will start on Jan 2 and end on Nov 14 next year.

MOE said that the dates take into account 40 weeks of curriculum time for teaching and learning, before the start of national examinations.

They also take into account six weeks of school vacation at the end of the year for teachers and students.

    The scheduled school holidays are:

    Teachers' Day on Sept 5

Children's Day - only for primary schools and primary sections of full schools - on Oct 3

Youth Day falls on July 6, a Sunday. As a result, July 7 will be a scheduled school holiday.

Two other Mondays - Feb 3 and Aug 11 - will also be school holidays as they follow public holidays falling on Saturdays: Chinese New Year on Feb 1 and National Day on Aug 9.

Oct 6 will be a public holiday as it follows Hari Raya Haji, which falls on the day before, a Sunday, said MOE.

Tentatively, Deepavali will fall on Oct 23, but this date will need to be confirmed against the Hindu almanac when it is available. Should there be a change in date, the Ministry of Manpower will issue a media release to announce the change, MOE added.
