Air quality in Singapore deteriorated to hazardous levels late on Wednesday as smoke from slash-and-burn land clearing in Indonesia enveloped the city, inflaming tensions between the South-east Asian neighbours.

    Medical subsidies for haze-related ailments

    Expect the haze to last for weeks or even longer, warned Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday. But he gave the assurance that the Government will help children, teenagers and seniors by subsidising their medical treatment for haze-related ailments. The Pollutant Standards Index hit a new high of 371 in the hazardous range at 1pm yesterday.
