    McDonald's first Kitty toy selling out

    THE Hello Kitty plush toys from McDonald's are selling fast, after the first of five designs was released last Thursday.

    A McDonald's spokesman told My Paper that the first design - Hello Kitty dressed as the Lion from The Wizard Of Oz - was expected to sell out yesterday at most outlets.

    Demand for the plushies through the fast-food chain's delivery hotline and website has also been strong.

    The reason? A special-edition Hello Kitty toy, which McDonald's is offering only through its delivery service. This is a first for a McDonald's Kitty toy series.

    The overwhelming demand for this special plushie has resulted in orders getting delayed, the McDonald's hotline being engaged, and even caused the delivery website to go down several times late last week.

    Medical technologist Delphine Cao, 28, said she experienced a delivery crunch for the toy last Thursday. To get around it, she pre-ordered her meals and plushies a day in advance, for delivery last Friday.

    But McDonald's said on its delivery site last evening that it will not be taking advance orders due to a "high order volume".

    The fast-food operator yesterday apologised on its Facebook page for any inconvenience caused to customers, after many customers who could not get the plushies complained on the page.

    McDonald's added that the popularity of the Hello Kitty promotion "exceeded our expectations".

    Teacher Lyn Tan, 33 - who was unsuccessful in placing an order on the McDelivery site and hotline last Saturday afternoon - said McDonald's "should have been better prepared" for the large number of orders expected.

    A McDonald's spokesman said that the chain increased the number of Hello Kitty plushies by close to 40 per cent for the current toy series, because it anticipated strong demand based on good response to last year's series.

    To help customers find outlets with available plushie stocks, an online tracking feature was introduced on its website.

    Despite the competition with other customers for plushies, some, like Ms Tan, are not deterred. She said: "The Kitty plushies are so cute that even adults like them. I'm going to try my luck (to get one) again today."
