    How to safeguard your home

POLICE have also been spotted distributing fliers to private homes in the Serangoon area last week.

When contacted, the police said the main aim of this was to remind the public to "exercise greater vigilance and to take appropriate crime-prevention measures".

Here is some police crime-prevention advice for home owners.

Ensure all doors, windows and other openings are well secured with good-quality grilles and close-shackle padlocks.

Secure all doors and windows before sleeping or when leaving your house unattended, even for a short while.

Install a burglar alarm, sensor light, closed-circuit surveillance camera, or all of them, to cover the access points into your home. Ensure they are tested periodically and in good working condition.

Keep large sums of cash in banks, and expensive jewellery in a safe-deposit box.

If you are going on a vacation, ask family members or neighbours to visit your home regularly while you are away; temporarily suspend your newspaper subscriptions, and inform your Neighbourhood Police Centre of your absence.
