    Guess what killed pigeons

THE deaths of a number of pigeons in two estates as the haze worsened last month got residents concerned. Were the birds killed by the haze?

The incidents, which took place in Bukit Panjang and Circuit Road, were reported on citizen-journalism website Stomp.

Twelve dead pigeons were reported in Circuit Road, while about 10 were spotted in Bukit Panjang.

The Bukit Panjang incident occurred on June 17. The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading was between 68 and 83 at 4pm.

The Circuit Road incident was posted on Stomp on June 20, when the 24-hour PSI was 179-214 at 4pm, up from 101-121 the day before.

The Marine Parade Town Council, which Circuit Road comes under, told My Paper that the "dead pigeons were a result of an ongoing bird-culling exercise during that period".

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) confirmed this.

"With regard to the Bukit Panjang case, as the birds have been disposed of, we are unable to ascertain the cause of death," an AVA spokesman said.

Of the haze's effect on birds, the Jurong Bird Park said yesterday that the birds at the park were behaving normally.
