Guards 'laughed as they shot Taiwan boat'
PHILIPPINE coast guards were laughing as they fired at a Taiwanese fishing boat, killing a fisherman and igniting a diplomatic crisis between Taipei and Manila, sources told The Philippine Daily Inquirer.
"The video showed that the soldiers acted unprofessionally. They were laughing while they were shooting the boat," a source who had seen the video of the Philippine Coast Guard shooting of fishing boat Guang Ta Hsin 28 three weeks ago said last Saturday.
Taiwanese fisherman Hung Shih-chen, 65, was hit and killed in the shooting.
"It is disturbing and embarrassing for Philippine law enforcers," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
The source said the coast guard submitted the video to the National Bureau of Investigation after President Benigno Aquino ordered an investigation into the fatal shooting of Mr Hung.
The source said the video showed the fishing boat, after sailing beside the patrol vessel, peel away and move in "circles, as if daring the (coast-guard vessel) to come after it".
