Tokyo 2020 to ease heat in marathon
A LAND ministry panel of experts in Japan has roughly agreed on proposed measures against heat during the
2020 Tokyo Olympics
They include a plan to coat road surfaces used for marathons and race walks with a special material
to alleviate heat.
The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry plans to start the surfacing work after the event's routes are decided.
The panel has been tasked with discussing measures against heat
for the Tokyo Olympics
and Paralympics as the Games will take place
from July to September.
Measures to prevent athletes and spectators
from heatstroke have become an important issue.
The proposal suggests spraying a heat-blocking material on road surfaces, which curbs temperature rises by reflecting the infrared rays from sunlight.
Based on an experiment carried out by the panel
in August in Tokyo,
the temperature of a road paved with the heat
blocking material was lower than that of other roads
by 5 deg C to 7 deg C.
