Takashimaya rolls out 'healthy' beer garden
"GOOD for health and beauty" may be a strong selling point but it is not one you would typically associate with a beer garden, until now.
On the rooftop of the Takashimaya Yokohama Store, an open-air beer garden has started operating for the first time since the department store opened in 1959, and it focuses on fresh vegetables.
The food on offer at Farmers' Beer Garden is unlike the fare typically served at beer gardens, such as yakitori grilled chicken and edamame soybeans.
The rooftop beer garden uses fresh vegetables in its grilled creations, salads and even drinks to provide customers with tasty food that contributes to both health and beauty.
Aside from its regular vegetable offering, the beer garden has also set up a counter where about 10 kinds of vegetables purchased from featured farmers are offered.
After buying tickets for food and drinks, customers can choose fresh vegetables from the counter - many of which are from Kanagawa Prefecture - and ask for them to be cut into any size.
It also offers 10 kinds of original cocktails, including gin and tonic with cucumber and perilla leaves. There are also original non-alcoholic water-based drinks, subtly flavoured with vegetables, fruits and herbs.
"It's great to have a beer in a cool rooftop environment after work," said Naoto Hayashi, 45, of Isogo Ward, Yokohama.
He was visiting the place with members of his firm and its group company.
Ryo Kataoka, a first-year middle school student from Kanagawa Ward, Yokohama, said he came to the beer garden with his family after finishing fencing practice. "I feel refreshed after eating pork and crispy cucumber," he added.
