She sees cops differently now, thanks to Blue Bloods
BEING on a cop show can make an actor see officers of the law in a whole new light.
For Bridget Moynahan, who plays Erin Reagan in Blue Bloods, she looks beyond the uniform now - she sees their human side.
"A lot of times, I would just look at them as cops - hopefully, I'm not speeding or I won't get a ticket. But I never looked at them as having similar issues as myself or my brothers.
"That's what is so great about this series, some of those issues come up - problems with your wife or (being) unable to pay bills or getting divorced or (a) struggle with raising a teenage daughter," explained Moynahan in a conference call with the South-east Asian media to promote the new season of Blue Bloods.
"I think that's why a lot of people are attracted to the show. They are seeing all these people as people, not just solving a case," she added.
Blue Bloods is not your regular cop show either. At the heart of the series is a family of New York City cops.
Frank Reagan (played by Tom Selleck) is the New York police commissioner and head of the household. His father, Henry (Len Cariou), was the chief before Frank rose through the ranks.
Eldest son Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) is a seasoned detective and a family man. Daughter Erin is an assistant district attorney and single mother, while youngest son Jamie (Will Estes) is a patrol officer with a Harvard law degree.
Like the Reagans the show is focused on, the cast and crew have become a family over the five years they have worked together, shooting 111 episodes for the show's five seasons. The series has been renewed for a sixth season, which is slated to hit American goggle-boxes in September.
Not only does the 44-year-old actress appreciate how the cast have become close, but she also enjoys playing a single mother with a successful career on the show. She especially likes that Erin is strong but imperfect - she makes mistakes.
"I like the relationships she has with her family, even if they don't always get along. But sometimes, you know, I think she could relax a little," she said of her straight-laced character.
The American actress and former model also said that she cooks family dinners with her brothers, Andy and Sean, not unlike the Sunday family dinners seen on the show, with the Reagans gathering around the table for a hearty meal and to catch up on each others' lives.
Another similarity Moynahan shares with Erin is that they are both single mothers. Her character is a single parent to a teenage daughter, while Moynahan is raising a seven-year-old son on her own. But being a single mum on- and off-screen does not mean she can put her personal experience to good use on the show.
"In some ways, you can bring some things together like being a single parent, working and balancing that juggling act, as well as working with the father of the child.
"But raising a teenage girl is much different from raising a young boy. I think the teenage girl is a whole different beast, so I don't have any experience in that," Moynahan said with a laugh.
Prior to landing the part on Blue Bloods, she acted in several movies including Serendipity, The Sum Of All Fears and I, Robot. More recently, she acted opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick.
Her big TV break came 15 years ago, when she took on the role of Natasha in Sex And The City, the second wife of Mr Big.
Years later, people still recognise her because of that role or her movie debut in Coyote Ugly.
"It's nice to get reminded of that period of my life and the people I worked with, which is really the beginning of my career. It's nice that people are being reminded of it and that I have that diversity," said Moynahan.
