Regression falls flat but Hawke, Watson shine

FILMS about the occult are always disturbing and this latest horror flick from Alejandro Amenabar is no different.
Set in a rural American town, the movie stars Ethan Hawke, who plays Bruce Kenner, a detective looking into a rape case that seems to have links to devil worship.
The victim is Angela (Emma Watson), a gentle, God-fearing country girl who "never tells lies". Kenner's investigation leads to some alarming and gory revelations.
Amenabar is no stranger to dark and twisty supernatural tales.
His award-winning The Others (2001) is a prime example, but this, sadly, is nowhere near that level.
Midway through the story, you know what the twist is going to be.
Hawke and Watson put up strong performances, but the script does not allow them to flourish.
